RAIN NOT ALL OVER
• PASSING SHOWERS TO BE EXPECTED. Hawkes Bay still badly requires rain, although there has been a welcome down.* pour in the Damievirke district. The province generally, however, has not fared So well ,as other parts of New Zealand. Rain was falling in Canterbury and Wanganui this morning, but in nearly all other places the skies ' were blue. As indicating how badly needed moisture was in the Wairarapa district, it may be mentioned that fodder is so scarce on the Tauherenikau racecourse that it has been found necessary to feed the sheep on hay for some time past. The Waingawa Btream has dwindled to a mere creek, and some of its tributaries have dried up, leaving the fish stranded. As the result of intermittent rains in the South Island matters are not quite so serious there in regard to winter feed as they were a few weeks ago. The grass paddocks ' ha.ye freshened up in most parts and the stubble feed haß considerably improved. As soon as harvest is over a good rain will be required to give all vegetation a lift and to soften' the ground for ploughing. In the Timaru district recent showers have imparted a touch of green to hitherto parched-up paddocks, and if more rain falls there should be plenty of winter feed. Evidently the rain is not yet all over, for the local Meteorological Office reports that changeable and showery weather may be expected with a cold night everywhere. Hawkes Bay will probably have a few showers, especially on the hills and in ■ the back country. The glass will rise temporarily and strong southerly winds will be experienced, changing by west to north early next week. The storm area intensified in the South yesterday and snow was reported on the higher levels. Strong southerly and westerly winds have prevailed gene* rally and the barometer rose during the night.
