ABOUT "HUMILIATION"

King George, writes an English review, has inherited from Queen Victoria a healthy objection to inappropriate use of the word "humiliation." When a day of humiliation was proposed durin» the Crimean War Her Majesty wrote in words that seem even more fitting on the present occasion : "To say (as we probably should) that the great sinfulness of the nation has brought about this war, when it is the selfishness and ambition of one man and his servants which have brought this about, while our conduct has been throughout actuated by unselfishness and honesty, would be too manifestly repulsive to the feelings of everyone, and would be a mere act of hypocrisy. Let there be a prayer expressive of great thankfulness for the benefits we have enjoyed, and for tfie immense prosperity of this country, and entreating God's help and protection in the coming struggle. In this the Queen would join heart and soul."
