RELIEF FUNDS

IN WELLINGTON DISTRICT. It is reported by the committee in Wellington of the Poor of Great Britain and Ireland and Belgium Relief Fund that the total amount received from Wellington and the surrounding provincial districts now totals the hand&ome sum of £30,161 14s 2d. This represents actual cash received, and does not include value of clothing or foodstuffs already shipped or in hand, or promises of donations not yet available. If to this amount is added the sum of £14,385 17s 2d, which has been forwarded to the -Belgian Consul in Wellington, the Hon. C. J. Johnston, M.L.C., the total is brought up to £44,547 11s 4d for overseas relief. _ The country districts and the provincial towns are reported to have been most generous in their support to the fund, and have contributed their proportion of the total. Wellington city, on the other hand, lias been somewhat backward, and the committee are making a further appeal for contributions from organised societies and clubs, as well as industrial and commercial associations. The fund is being administered as far as Wellington is concerned practically without, expense. The committee receives contributions either for British or Belgian relief, and the instructions of those making donations are carefully carried out when the allocations are being made. As the money accumulates it is handed to His Excellency the Governor, who cables it through the Bank of New Zealand free of exchange to the High Commissioner in London, with instructions to hand the amount for British relief to the executive of the Prince of Wales's Fund for administration, and the sum for Belgian relief to the proper Belgian authorities for distribution. A further remittance (the fourth) will be sent Home in a few days' time.
