WAR ON THE SANDS

REMARKABLE FIGHT FOR THE GREAT DUNE ALLIES SEIZE GERMAN POSITION. LONDON, Ist February. The Daily Chronicle's Dunkirk correspondent writes: "The attack on the Great Dune last Thursday was a remarkable feat. The Germans were strongly entrenched on a great sandy plateau, and numerous trenches had been strengthened with heavy planks. Their guns often rendered Lombaertzyde untenable. "The Zouaves and Indians threw themselves on the German trenches with magnificent dash, after the ground had been well swept by our artillery. They lost three hundred, while the German marines lost five hundred. The Allies are now in possession of the western portion of the Great Dune, while the Germans hold the remainder, and also Westende (on the coast, two miles north of Nieuport and one mile north of Lombaertzyde).
