LOCAL AND GENERAL ♦ A private letter received in Wellington state* that the recent spell of hot weather has brought the hop crops in the Nelson, district on very fast, and it is hoped td begin picking in some of the gardens in about a fortnight's time. Raspberry growers report a very good season. Questioned by a Post Teporter regarding the latest developments in connection with the maintenance of the Hutt-road, Mr. J. W. M'Ewan (Mayor of Petone) expressed the opinion that the Government and the Wellington City Council were merely putting off the "evil day of settlement." The Petone Council, however, he said, was content to adopt a non-committal attitude, and to let matters stand as they were for the time being. Mr. M'Ewan did not think that the arrangement made between the Government and the City Council would appreciably relieve the deadlock. Hop-growing is developing in the , Motueka district. Last year 1915 bales were exported, or 83 bushels more than in the previous yeai. The progress of fruitgrowing in the same district — which for this purpose is taken to include the Moutere country — in indicated by the following figurgs supplied to Mr. Moffatt, secretary of the Motueka Harbour Board. There was despatched over the Motueka Wharf for the year ended 31st December, 1914. 227,360 bushels, against 143,229 bushels for the previous_ year, an increase of 84,131 bushels in the twelve months. Some twelve months ago Messrs. Staples and Co. started a scheme for the remodelling of their brewery in Murphystreet, but at that time only a portion was carried out — the erection of an engine-room and cold storage rooms. Arrangements have now been made to complete the scheme by erecting a tower and copper house and chimney stack. The tower will be about 42tt square, and four floors, rising to a height of 80ft. Adjoining the tower there will be a building of three floors for the storage of malt and sugar. Thß copper-house will occupy an area of about 52ft by 48ft, and will have an average of 30ft in height, and it is to be constructed on the American "skeleton steel-frame" principle, which makes a building as nearly fire-resisting as possible. The brewing equipment has been ordered from England and is expected to be here in time to be set in the building on its completion. The time for the >• completion of the work is eight months, Messrs. Campbell and Burke are the contractors, and the architects are Messrs. Thomas Turnbull and Son, FF.8.1.8.A. At the Ruakura Farm of Instruction a small area of chou moellier has stood the drought well and is nearly fit for cutting. Apart from this, lucerne is the only successful fodder crop this season. It has been used for soiling purposes for the past four months. The erect, well-built man looks perfectly dressed in a " Fowlds 1 " 6ports suit. The favourite prices are 255, 30s, 38s. Geo. Fowlds, Ltd., Manners-street. — Advt. Men's Caps in fashionable shapes and in a large range of colourings, costing originally 4s 6d to 6s 6d, are to be bought during the sale at Is 6d, 2s 6d each.
