COMMERCIAL MATTERS
MEETING OF THE CHAMBER. The monthly meeting of the Council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. There were present : Messrs. C. W. Jonea (president), W. G. Foster, W. J. Thompson, T. Ballinger, J. M'Lellan. and R. W. I Waterhouse. As Mr. Jones had to leave on urgent private business, Air. W. G. Foster "was votedf to the chair. Mr. J. G. Harkness and Mr. Bridson were granted leave of absence. The resignation of Mr. E. J. HyanVs and Mr. A. M. Samuel were accepted. Later in the meeting, Mr. J. Macintosh (Vice-presi-dent) arrived and took the chair. Accounts amounting to £40 were passed for payment. The secretary reported on the subject of the parcels service between Wellington and Auckland. The effect of it was that the Department looked to tlte business firms of Wellington to assist it by putting in 'the parcels at as early an hour in the day as neesible. — Mr. Ballinger moved that the Railways Department be urged to put a postal van on to the 9.10 p.m. train. This was agreed to. A letter was read From the Secretary of the London Chamber of Commerce, who stated that he had received confidential information from the Board of Trade that there is a likelihood of early legislation in New Zealand having for its object the prohibition of the use of white lead in paint. That, lie said, would particularly affect the white lead trade, and lie asked for particulars and as to the best means to be taken to bring the facts to the notice of the authorities in New Zealand. The subject was referred to the Legislation Committee. The Feilding Chamber of Commerce wrote stating that it approved of the proposal to establish' a Board of Trade in New Zealand The letter was received. The Secretary of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce wrote again on the subject of automatip stamping machines and the deposit thereon, which is now claimed as "payment in advance." It was decided to make further enquiries. The Southland League and Invercargill Chamber of Commerce wrote asking the Wellington Council's support in favour of the establishment in various centres of British-made goads. The letter was received.
