PROPOSED MUNICIPAL GOLF LINKS
In the peregrinations of the Mayor, the Chairman of the Reserves Committee, and the City Engineer about the city reserves in search of a suitable spot for golf links, the advantages of a course from Constable-street to Mount Victoria, on the eastern slopes of the range, were brought under their notice by the professional golf players, Messrs. Simpson and Wall, who are understood to be of the opinion that the Mount Victoria situation is very much superior to that of the proposed links at Berhampore. t In fact, a very enthusiastic verdict is said to have been passed on the Hataltai suggestion, and the matter is to be brought under the notice of the City Council at an early date.
The meaning of sea power is rather vividly brought out by the fact that, so far as our Board of Trade is aware, there are only 10 German merchant ships plying their business in all the seas of the world. Nearly 90 per cent, of the enemy's tonnage is positively known to be captured, detained, or shut up in its own' or reutrai harbours, while on the British side the corresponding percentage is 2.9. With tiese figures before it, the meanest intelligence ought to be able to realise "what the Navy is doing." The German War Office, in its anxiety for copper and ammunition ingredients, certainly knows. A case presenting unusual feature* was quashed in the Supreme Court, Fiji, on Monday, 21st December, before hi* Honoor Acting Chief Justice Alexander. James Harper was convicted before Mr. District Commissioner Hamilton Hunter, sitting at Waiyero, on 10th November, on a charge of having failed to attend at the Taviuni wireless station as a member of the Fiji Rifle Association. He was fined £10, with £5 19s 6d costs. Under the laws of the colony all members of rifle clubs are liable for service on the outbreak of war. The conviction failed on the ground tliafc there was no roll shown for 1914. The last roll produced by the prosecution in the original case was that for 1913. "Farmers are a truthful lot," said a member of the South Canterbury Executive of the Farmers' Union at a meeting at Timaru on Saturday. Strange to say (reports the Herald), the remark caused a very hearty general laugh. A considerable improvement is reported in the condition of Railway Fireman Hyde, who yras severely injured through being knocked down by the Auckland express' at Paekakariki. Only a fortnight or co ago Mr. Hyde was nearly drowned at Paekakariki, being rescued just in time, while a while back he, with others, was lost on the hills at the back of Paekakariki, when ho narrowly escaped death. YOU SHOULD BE DETERMINED In^ rejecting the worthless and frequently injurious counterfeits which are sometimes pushed for the sake of greater gain as "just as good" as the Genuine Sander and Sons' Pure Volatile Eucalypti Extract. Bo not deceived. Sander's Extract is recognised by the highest Medioal authorities as possessing unique ■timul&iing, healing, and antiseptio pow«rs. The preparation of SANDER'S EXTRACT from the pure selected leaves, and the refinement by speoial processes, give it curative virtues peculiarly its own. Demand and insist upon the GENUINE SANDER EXTRACT.Advt. The Scottish Society will give "A Nicht wi' Burns" in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall this evening.
