OFFICIAL NEWS HIGH COMMISSIONER'S MESSAGE
The Prime Minister has received the following from the New Zealand High Commissioner : — LONDON. 14th January, 4.30 a.m. Paris reports : "That ' north-east of Soissons the Allies' counter-attack has progressed slightly between Cuffies and Crouy, but their troops were unable to debouch from Crouy. Violently attacked east of this locality, the Allies fell back slightly near the village of Moncel, which they occupy."' Petrograd reports): "Artillery fire, and outpost skirmishes along the whole front. A Russian detachment, advancing in East Prussia east of Roson, occupied several villages after fighting. From one the Germans were driven out by a bayonet attack. South-east of Mlawa the Russians progressed in the direction of Radzanow. Several German advances were easily repulsed." LONDON, 14th January, 6.36 p.m. Paris reports : — "The Belgians exploded the Stuyvekerkez farm, used by the enemy as an ammunition depot. North of Soissons there has been heavy fighting all day on two hills— one north-eaßt and one north-west of Crouy. The Allies are holding the first slopes. A counterattack on the left slightly progressed, without, ho\»ever, appreciable advance. The centre position was maintained despite repeated efforts by the enemy, but east of Vregny the Allies yielded ground. "Owing to the rise of the Aisne destroying bridges, the Allies' communications were rendered precarious; they therefore established themselves south of the river."
