PERSONAL MATTERS
This morning a deputation of business ! men in Palmerston North waited upon Mr. (3. J. Nathan (a director of Messrs. Joseph Nathan and Co.) and asked him to allow himself to be nominated for the Mayoralty. Mr. Nathan conaented to become a candidate. The Very Rev. Dean Regnault, S.M., left for the South last night. Mr. E. Camberwell, sen., of Christchurch, is on a visit to Wellington. Mr. Robert Hutton is gazetted an inspector under the Orchard and Garden Diseases Act. Mr. George Evans is reported to be making a satisfactory recovery from his recent illness. Mr. P. W. Jackson has returned to Wellington after spending the legal vacation at Auckland. Sub-Inspector Broberg, recently promoted and transferred^ to Dunedin, left for the South last night. Mr. A. J. George, of the firm of Messrs. George, Doughty, and Co., has returned to New Zealand from a business visit to Great Britain and America. Mr. J. W. H. Scotland, the New Zealand aviator, who is about to leave for England to join the Army Flying Corps, is at present in Wellington. Mr. J. S. Douglas has been appointed a member of the board constituted under the Plumbers' Registration Act, in place of Mr. A. Burt, jun., who has resigned. Mr. A. M'Farlane, of the Pahiatua district, who is a member of the Wcl: lington Harbour Board, returned to I Wellington by the Remuera on Wednesday. % ' Mr. D. M. Kavanagh, postmaster at Riwaka for the past twenty-eight years, is spending his annual holiday in Wellington. He is accompanied by Mrs. Kavanagh. In this week's Gazette it is notified that His Excellency the Governor has accepted the resignation of the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher of the various offices held by him. The resignation dates from 7th January. Mi*. Robert Gibson, for many years foreman carpenter at the Petone Railway Workshops, died at his residence on Wednesday evening at the age of sixtyfive years. He leaves a widow, a son, and five grandchildren. Senior-sergeant Cassells left for his new sphere of duties at Hamilton last night. Previous to his departure he was farewelled by a large number', of his friends, including members of the Police Force and of the Thorndon Amateur Swimming Club. Mr. Ernest Drummond, a well-known settler at Biwaka, died last^ night, at the age of fifty-two. The deceased, who was the eldest son of Mr. Alex. Drummond, one of the pioneers o f Riwaka, had been ill with pneumonia for some time past. He lias left a widow and twelve young children. Mr. J. Wilczinsky was last night the recipient of a case of pipes, a pouch, and tobacco on the occasion of his 83rd birthday. The presentation was made by members of the Jewish Club in the club rooms, when eulogistic references were made to the esteem in which Mr. Wilczinsky is held by his many friends. Mr. J. L. H. Ledger, Controller of Money Orders and Post Office Savings Banks in the Post and Telegraph Department, has returned to Wellington from an eight months' trip to the Old Country. ' He was in France shortly before the war broke out, and thereafter confined his travels to the United Kingdom. Inspector O'Donovan left Napier today to take charge of the 'Dunedin Police district. Before his departure he was presented with an illuminated address from the citizens of Napier, and Mrs. o' Donovan was presented by the citizens with a purse of sovereigns, and by the 1 members of the Hawkes Bay Police Force with a pearl and diamond pendant. On the occasion of the presentation several eulogistic speeches were made as to the popularity of the departing Inspector, to his unassuming manner, never-failing courtesy, and the quiet yet exceedingly capable manner in winch he has carried out his duties. The reporters of the local newspapers also presented Inspector O'Donovan with 3 fountain pen as a token of their esteem.
