TO RELIEVE WAR DISTRESS
Members of the War Distress Committee held a meeting yesterday, when thei'e were present: The Mayor (Mi*. J. P. Luke), Rev. W. A. Evans, Messrs. R. Fletcher, M.P., E. C. Jack, L. M. A. Rearden, Moston (Labour Department), and W H. Morton (City Engineer). The Mayor's report upon the financial position of the funds was received with great satisfaction, and surprise was expressed that the expenditure up to the present had been kept at a low figure. It was explained that, whenever possible, men were being assisted to employment, arid were given monetary relief only where tho circumstances of their cases made it very difficult for them to find any work. These cases were of two main classes : the families of reservists and men who, because of physical disabilities, could do only light work, of which there is not much available. A number of these cases were dealt with by the committee, and many -more have been dealt with by the Mayor, who is every day waited upon by applicants for relief or employment. Whenever possible, as has been stated, work is being provided by urging on corporation works. In no case is monetary assistance given where it should come properly from the Charitable Aid authorities.
