LATE WORKING NIGHTS
Secretaries of unions affected by the Shops and Offices Act are again this year being questioned as to the meaning of section 5 of the Shops and Offices Act. That section specially provides for assistants being employed up to 11 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. What assistants want particularly to know is whether or not a second late night — the ordinary 9 p.m. closing night — can also be observed by shopkeepers. Speaking to a .Post representative to-day, Mr. E. J. Carey, secretary of the Grocers' Union, stated that the question was first raised some two or three years ago, and it was then held by the Labour Department that section 5, enabling the late night to 11 p.m. to be worked, should not in any way interfere with the other ordinary 9 p.m. closing privilege of the shopkeepers. In effect, the secretaries are advising that two late nights can be worked during the two weeks (Christmas week and New Year week), one being to 11 p.m. and the other to 9 p.m. Mr. Carey added that under the grocers' award 2nd January was a holiday for grocers in addition to Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day.
