THE SUGGESTED COMPROMISE
AN OPPOSITION PAPER'S COMMENTS. (■I IBLBQRAPH.— SPECIAL TO THB POST.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The Star, in an editorial on the political situation, says: "The Press, the Dominion, and in a lesser degree, the Evening Post, declared an inexplicable war long ago on Sir Joseph Ward, the Liberals, and Labour, and it is due solely to their misrepresentation that it is now difficult to establish in the interests of the whole Dominion a satisfactory compromise. But this does not deter the Evening Post from supporting the Dominion's proposal for a coalition ; indeed, The Post goes so far as to mention Mr. Arthur Myers as the member of the Liberal Party whom the Reformers would gladly welcome into the Cabinet. Mr. Myers, The Post is sure, can be trusted to regard the situation in an unprejudiced spirit, and it there :ore urges the Government to carry put its suggestion, 'by giving a portfolio to the least polemical of its opponents.' We have no doubt about Mr. Myers, or the way in which he will meet this flagrant attempt to bribe him into changing sides and bolstering up the tottering 'Reform Cabinet, but it is all very interesting, and it is characteristic of the 'Reformers' ' standard of political morality that, after the furious attacks they have made upon the Liberal Party and Liberal principles, they should now strenuously endeavour to draw Sir Joseph Ward and some of his friends into an alliance at this critical moment by offering to share with them the spoils of office, so as to save Mr. Massey and his colleagues from passing from the Treasury benches."
