DEATH OP WELL-KNOWN CRICKETER
A. 0. JONES. (Received December 22, 8.20 a.m.) LONDON, 21st December. A. 0. Jones, the well-known cricketer, is dead. He never fully recovered from the attack of pneumonia during his last visit to Australia. [Mr. A. 0. Jones was captain of the Notts County team, and on© of the best-known amateur cricketers in England. He was a free and dashing bats* man, excelling in the cut and drive } and a reliable and consistent scorer, His tally of runs at the end of each season was always a solid one, and he invariably held a good place in the averages. He first came into notice with the Cambridge University team, where his fielding attracted attention. Indeed, he could hold his own anywhere in this department of the game, although he was best known for 1 his expertness at short-slip. In his younger days he could also bowl well. In his first teat match he Becured the wickets of Trumper, Trumble, and Kelly, and scored 31 runs. He visited Australia on two occasions, but scarcely did justice to himself. It must be said, however, that on his second trip—when he captained his side—he was laid up with illness in the first few weeks of the tour, and thus was at a great disadvantage. Indeed, this illness kept him out of the first three test matches of the tour., Jones worked with great energy for Nottingham, both on and off the field, and did much to revive the former glory of the lace county. It is needless to say that he will be much missed. He was born on 16th August, 1872. Mr. Jones was alao a prominent footballer, and afterwards one of the best-known referees in England, often officiating in international games.]
