LOCAL AND GENERAL A return made up by the Treasury to the 7th inst. shows that the contnbu* tions.made by the public of New Zealand to the War Fund up to that date amounted to £137,031. For the Belgium relief and other funds the amount leceiyed by the Government was £13,« 774— making a total of £150,805. The Hon. J. Allen, Minister of Fin> ance, announces that owing to the splendid results from the Post Office Savings Bank for November which shows an excess! of deposits over withdrawals to the extent of £135,000, he has advised the Superintendent of the State Advances Office that money will be available to increase the maximum advances to settlers from £750 to £1000, and of those to local authorities from £1000 to £2000. To-morrow at the Supreme Court, at 10.30 a.m., the civil sessions will be resumed, the case set down for hearing being the Public Trustee versus J. B. D. Koch, claim for possession of land. The ten-day service inaugurated last month between New Zealand ports and the Commonwealth appears to be meeting all immediate demands (says the Otago Daily Times). At any rate" there has been no complaint from those who were, so clamorous before the present service commenced. Meanwhile tho passenger and cargo service appears to have maintained brisk proportions. Tho coastal trade has been also brisk of late, and it is noticeable that many of .the smaller and older types of coastal steamers are being from time to time superseded by larger and more up-to-date vessels. Matters in connection with the tram waya usually occupy a good deal of the attention of members of the Karori Borough Council, And at last evening's meeting of that body there was no exception to the rule. Most of the discussion arose in connection with subjects of fairJy long standing. A now item was introduced, however— the ques^ tion of running an extra car to Karori between 5.17 p.m. and 5.47 p.m. It was suggested that the 5.32 p.m. car from Courtenay-place to Northland should be run through to the Council Chambers on Saturdays. Put in the form of a motion, this was carried, and the resolution will be forwardod to the Tramways Board of the City Council to deal with. "We thought we excelled in rumours ; but last night we were rudely awakened to the fact that as far as exaggeration goes, we are hopelessly outclassed by the local sons of the Fatherland" (remarks the Apian Pull Thro'). Here's a sample, told in all good faith, just as we were off to press^ The German Navy, armed with a new gun, emerged from the Kiel Canal, engaged the British fleet, sank 8 dreadnoughts, 10 cruisers, and assumed command of the Narrow Seas. Their losses amounted to 5 dreadnoughts, 2 cruisers. Title was not all. Off Madeira a German squadron encountered the Canadian transports, convoyed by 6 warships. All the convoy was sunk, and not a single transport escaped. This means that 18,000 | Canadians found a watery grave." [ "E.D.W.," a member of the Hutt School Committee, writes :— "With your permission I should like to ease the mind of your correspondent, 'P.J.S.H.,' j with reference to the issue of certificates in lieu of prizes, in order that the money raised for the prize fund may be sent home towards the relief of the Belgian children. So far as the Hutt schools are concerned, it was decided last week, on the suggestion of Mr. A. N. Burns, headmaster, that the certificates shall record the fact that the money raised for the prize fund has been devoted towards the relief of tho Belgian children. I should like to add that there will be no feeling of disappointment on the part of the prize-winners, as the course adopted is the practically unanimous, and very laudable, desire of the scholars themselves." A rifle range for Karori is being mooted, and at the meeting of the Karon Borough Council last evening, the Mayor (Mr. W. T. Hildreth) reported that a number of those interested in the formation of a range had selocted a site. This was reported to be one of the best of its kind in the district, and it had been ascertained that, subject to the owner's permission being obtained, ranges from 200 to 600 yards could be formed. The Mayor and Councillors Skegg, Boyes, and Ciniino, and the Borough Engineer (Mr. G. W. Brigham) were appointed a committee to go fully into the whole question of acquiring the land, etc.. and to report to the next meeting of the council. It was suggested, during a discussion, that the Karori Rifle Club should take charge of the range, or lease it from the council when the whole matter is fixed up. Another suggestion made was that the Government should bo approached with a view to purchasing the land in question for use as a rifle-range. Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd., intimate that Thursday, the 10th instant, is the last discount day fov monthly accounts —Advt. Men who swim afc tho bays will appreciate our two-garment swimming suit at 6s 6d, just a nice weight. Geo. Fowlds,
