CANDIDATES' ADDRESSES
MR. HOLLAND AT SYDNEYSTREET. LABOUR CRITICISM OF THE GOVERNMENT. Mr. H. Holland, Social-Democratic candidate for Wellington North, addressed about 150 electors at the Syd-ney-street schoolroom last evening. He received an excellent hearing, and was loudly applauded when he rose to speak. He criticised the Massey Government severely for the way in which it had mutilated the Labour laws, particularly in the direction of allowing the formation of bogus unions. The Massey party had striven to legislate against the worker in all directions. It was opposed _ to the system of co-operative labour just because it was the fairer method, and if the Tories came into power again, which they certainly would not do — (applause) — the big contractorswould again hold full sway. He predicted that after next Thursday the Liberals would again be in 'power, hut it was particularly desirable that there should be a strong representation of Labour to urge the Liberals in forward movements. The Massey Party had failed to realise the requirements of the people as a whole, and had therefore failed to make good. The fight in Wellington North was between Toryism on the one hand and Labour on the other. Mr. Fullbrook was out of it— '-( laughter)— and Mr. Turnbull was evidently not a serious • factor. In answering a question, the candidate suggested that Mr. Turnbull was more likely to split the Tory vote than > the Progressive vote. In "answer. to, other questions, he stated that he favoured the bare majority on the liquor question, and was opposed to the Referendum or any vote on a religious question. He was in favour of the people being given a chance to vote on the question of abolishing the totalisator. A vote of thanks and confidence, moved by Mrs. Beck, was carried unanimously on a show of hands.
