RAILWAY FATALITY
INQUEST ON VICTIM. An inquest into the cause of the death of Patrick Bain, who died at the Hospital on Wednesday from injuries received in a fa.ilwuy shunting accident at Thorndon on Wednesday last, was conducted by the Coroner (Mr D G A Cooper, S.M ) yesterday afternoon. Mr A" II Mellor appeared on behalf of the Railway Department , Dr J A. Marshall stated that when deceased was admitted to . the Hospital he was in a stato of collapse, but conscious. His right leg was severed a little above the middle of the thigh. Death was due to shock resulting from tho injuries James Barr, driver of tho engine which struck deceased, gave evidence to the effect that whilst shunting some trucks in a southerly direction He noticed another enginedriver come out from between the trucks, and he also observed a shunter close by give the danger signal. The emergency brakes were immediately applied, and he (the driver) went to tho sccuo of the accident, whore two men appeared to have been benoubly injured He summoned medical aid, and then assisted ii> rendering first aid to the two men In reply to questions by Mr Mellor, Barr stated: (1)_ (he two doctors wore in attendance about five minutes after, flic accident occurred; (2) when setting back, after coupling, he gave Ihe usual warning signal — two blasts. Corroborative evidence was given by Ihomas Guthrie, fireman with James Barr, John S Ferguson, shunter, James Ash, ganger, and David Hutchison A verdict was returned that death was causer! by shock due 1o injuries received during bhunting operations at the Thorndew railway yard, no blame being attachable to anyone.
