BOWLING
TWO FEET ON THE MAT MEETING OF WELLINGTON CENTRE. The delegates to the Wellington Bowling Centre met last night in the Wellington Club pavilion to discuss the new rule laid down by the Dominion Bowling Association, that players shall in future deliver their bowls, with two feet, or portion of two feet, on the mat. Mr. E. J. Hill presided. The secretary (Mr. J. J. Roberts) ex* plained that at a previous meeting of the Executive Committee the centre had endorsed the new rule. Recently, however, the rule had again been di£ ; cussed, and as it was known that a large number of players held that the rule was not desirable,, the centre decided ttlat each club affiliated to it should be written to asking it to call a meeting of members to obtain their opinion on the new la,yt. The clubs then to instruct their delegates, and the latter to voice the opinion of the club^at that meeting. Mr. Keith (Victoria) said that his club had not held a meeting, and he did not know'ite opinion on the matter. He asked if he Would be allowed to give his personal vote on the question. Mr. Snaddon (president of the Victoria Club) said that jio meeting of the club had been held, but, personally, he had interviewed the members, and the great majority were in. favour of the new rule. The directors had instructed the speaker and Mr. Evans to vote for tire proposal. Later in the evening a motion, was carried that where delegates had not been instructed by their clubs, the delegates be allowed to vote according to their discretion. Mr. Allport (Hutt) moved, and Mr. Bennett (Rarori) seconded, "That ; in the opinion of this centre, the, rule re quiring two feet on the mat is not con. ducive to the welfare of bowling in this Dominion, and that the rule, ' therefore, be rescinded, and the old rule reverted to, with the proviso that the whole of the back foot must be on the mat, failing which a penalty of removing the bowl should be enforced." ' '■-' After a long discussion, Mr. Shalicras* (Te Hiwi) moved and Mr. Keith (Victoria) seconded, "That the meeting should adjourn to the 21st inst., to al* low all delegates tp be instructed by their clubs how to vote.' 1 This wa^lost. Mr. Snaddon pointed out that the whole meeting was a waste of time. The rule had been laid down by the council, and, for this year, it could not be altered. The clubs must adhere to it. In his opinion the rule was a good, one. Mr. Airport's motion was then put, and lost by 15 votes tp 13. Th 6 clubs voting againstit (in favour of the rule) were Hataitai, Kelburn. Khandallah, Lyall Bay, Te Hiwi, Thorndon. 'Victoria, (two delegates) j those for it (one foot) : Hutt, Johnsonville, Karori, Newtown, Victoria (one delegate), and Wellington. East bourne, Otaki, Petone, Seatoun, and Upper Hutt were not represented. It was aJso decided that the Dominion Council be asked to stipulate the penal' ties for breaches of the rules of the game ; and that the centre ask clubs to appoint umpires for inter-club games, covering all competitions.
