LOCAL AND GENERAL A sharp shQck of earthquake was felt in Wellington " on Saturday evening at 7.58 o'clock. The Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department has received the following from the postmaster at Tokomaru Bay : "A sharp shock of earthquake of short duration was felt at 11.30 last night (Sunday). The direction appeared to be north to &outh." Some newspapers last week published an extract from a private letter written by one of the New Zealand garrison at Samoa stating that a German who had made an endeavour to leave the island with plans of Apia and of the trenches and the other defence preparations had been captured, courtmartialled, and ordered to be shot. The Prime Minister has been advised by His Excellency the Governor that Colonel Logan, in charge of the Administration, at Samoa, had reported that there was no truth in the statement that a German had been condemned to death. Riflemen who journeyed out to Trentham on Saturday had the unique experience of being accommodated in carriages utilised for the Auckland- Wellington Main Trunk service. The explanation was that the carriages had just been renovated, and were given a trial run to rid them of the smell of fresh paint. But, although the accommodation provided was more luxurious) than that to which the marksmen were usually accustomed, tho locomotive was not quite ao up to date, and on the return journey broke down ignominioudy, and' came to a standstill. Eventually, after strenuous efforts and the commandeering <»f some wire from a neighbouring fence, the necessary repairs to one of the eccentric gears wa« effected. The train thon pro* ceeded on its way, being nearly two hours late in reaching Lambton Station. The two boys who were reported in last Fnday'3 Post as missing from their home in Tory-street have been found. Sergeant T. J. Kerr, a member of the Expeditionary Force now encamped at xventham, was mainly responsible for their return. While proceeding along the Termce on Saturday he was stopped by a lady, who stated that she had seen two boys who tallied with the de« scription given in The Post. The sergeant was on their tracks immediately. 'I he boys stoutly denied they had run away, and the sergeant left them at the corner of Ghuznee-street and the Terrace. He returned a few minutes later, however, and was surprised to see the two lads running away. So another chase was commenced, and this time, when ho had caught up, the sergeant took tnem to the nearest constable, who was able to recognis.e them. They were escorted to Mount Cook and later returned safely to their parents. Naturally Sergeant Kerr came in for commendation for the trouble he took in the , matter. There were good attendances throughout the day at the Lower Hutt Methodist Church yesterday, on the occasion of the celebration of the, seventieth anniversary of the Sunday-school. The speakers at the various services were the Revs. A. Hunt and W. Beckett, and Mr. H. J. Gl-ave.
