RIFLE SHOOTING

AT TRENTfiAM AND ELSEWHERE MARKSMANSHIP UNDER DIFFICULTIES Both at Trentham and elsewhere on Saturday afternoon rifle-shooting was carried out under difficulties. A high wind sadly upset calculations and tried the skill of marksmen to the limit. At Trentham this was particularly noticeable. KARORI CLUB. The Karori Club fired the first match of its teams competition, when nine teams of six men each competed. The team captained by Rifleman W. Chirnside finished one point ahead of that skippered by Pwflmn. J. Low, the totals being 291 and 290 respectively. A' feature of Saturday's shoot was the good showing made by several handicap men. Rifleman A. C. Atkinson headed the list with 62, and thereby won the ammunition prize presented by the secretary. The competition will be concluded next Saturday over the 800 and 1000 yards ranges. Following are Saturday's scores :

SUBURBS CLUB. The Suburbs Defence Rifle Club continued their trophy 6hooting on Saturday afternoon at the range, Broadway, Miramax-, at Tanges 300 and 600 yards, ten shots at each range. The best score for the day was made by A. J. Jackson with 89. The weather conditions at 600 yards were very troublesome to the competitors. In B Clas* N. D. Francis topped the list with 80, and in C Class F. L. Norris was top with 79. Next Wednesday wil] complete the second match in the first series. Next Saturday the club will fire their third match in the firat series at ranges 300, 500, and 600 yaTds, seven shots. Members who have not yet put in an appearance on the range are requested to do so by the Defence Department, otherwise the Department have requested tho president of the club to take action. The annual meeting of the Defence Staff Shooting Club was held At the Drill Hall, Buckle-street, on Friday evening, there being a very good attendance of members. The secretary's report, which was adopted, congratulated members on their second successful season. It was announced that a number of • leading firms had donated trophies for the coming season, while a number of new members on the staff had joined the club. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow : — Patron, His Excellency the F*rl of Liverpool; vicepatron, the Hon. James Allen; president, Major-General Sir A. J. Godley; vice-presidents, Colonel Robin, Colonel Reakes, Major Hughes, Major Mabin, Captain Rose, Captain Richardson, Captain Powles, Captain Skelley, Captain Cardale, Hon. F. .M. B. Fisher, Major Elliott, and Dr. Mason ; committee, Captain Kenny (captain), Mr. M'Comish and Mr. .Luckman (vice-captains), Mr. A. Lucas (hon. secretary), Mr. Aston (hon. treasurer), Mr. Crosson and SergeantMajor Martin (committeemen).

PETONE CLUB. The Petone Rifle Club fired its third match in the first series on Saturday. Rifleman A. Ballinger put up a 'good shoot under the conditions. Next Saturday the ranges will be 900 and 1000 yards, ten shots at each. The follow

OLD NAVAL CLUB. The Old. Naval Defence Rifle Club openedits second series of competitions on Saturday afternoon for trophies kindly presented by Hon. C. J. Johnston, Major A. G. Hume, Lieutenant M. E. Denniston, President J. Rabe, and club trophies. The day was an ideal one for an outing, but competitors had a variable wind to contend with, varying anything from five to eighteen degrees. However, the shooting was fairly good under the circumstances. President J. Rabe topped 4he score off the rifle with 87, closely followed by Rifleman "B.B." Pringle ' with 86. The conditions were 10 shots and sighter at each 300 and 500 yards. Following are the scores: —

Martin challenge badges resulted in a defeat for F. Sfcandidge's team by C. Hugo's team, with scores as follow : — C. Hugo's team— C. Hugo 82, M. Hugo 80, R. CT Collins 81, G. Dixon 76 ; total, 319. F. Standidge's team — F. E. Franklyn 85, T. Dell 85, F. Standidge 84, J. Wilton 47; total 301. Next Saturday the competitions will be continued at ranges of 500 and 6&0 yards, 10 shots and sighter at each.

HIGHLAND CLUB. Owing to a late start through re-allot-ing the targets, Riflemen Pitt, A. Shearer, Camming, Glasgow, J. Shearer, Johnson, and S. Shearer were unable to complete their shoot, much to the regret of everyone concerned. Next Saturday the competition will be fired over again at 500 and 600 yards. Results: —
