SWIMMING
SEASON OPENED AT THORNDON The Thorndon Club celebrated the opening of the season on Saturday afternoon. A 50yds handicap was held, and some excellent racing ensued. The 3eason was declared open by Mr. A: W. Smith, who apologised for the absence of Mr. T. Ronayne, 1.5.0., the president of the club. Mr. Smith announced that a number v of ladies' laces would be hold, commencing at au early date, and that the competition for juniors would also begin shortly. Afternoon tea was dispensed, and was much appreciated, especially by the large number of ladies presenti Details of the 50yds race are as follow : First heat — J. D. Burns, ssec, 1; V. Tipene, Bsec, 2; a-kso started, A. W. Smith, F. R. Webster, J. Barr, F. Godfrey, and W. Skinner; won by a' touch. Second heat— J. Garrett, 4sec, 1; P. Olsen, lsec, 2; J. Thomas, lsec, 3 ; also started, W. R. King, C. Lyford, and A. Cairns; a good finish. Final— T. C. Higginson, scr, 1; J. Garrett, 4sec, 2; time, 29 2-6 sec; won by a couple of feet. The Greytown Amateur Swimming Club held races at the local baths on Thursday. Results :— soyds maiden, J. Rea 1, P. White 2; neatest header, H. Feast; plunge, T. Tully; schoolboy race, K. M'Cracken; 75yds race, T. Tully 1, W. Muir 2.
