LATE GERMAN CONSUL

ARRESTED IN WELLINGTON YESTERDAY. Mr. E. Focke, the late German Consul in Wellington, was arrested by the police late yesterday afternoon upon a charge of corresponding with Germany secretly, and was handed over to the military authorities. He was taken over to Somes Island, where he is now a prisoner of war. Mr. Focke, who' has been a highly-respected citizen of Wellington for many years, was born in Bremen, and was in business there for four years, after which ha went to London and entered business there. He arrived in New Zealand in 1879, and has resided here for many years. He was a naturalised British subject.
