SITUATION UNCHANGED IN THE WEST DEFEAT OF THE PRUSSIAN GUARD HONOURS FOR BRITISH FIRST ARMY CORPS SINKING OF GERMAN SHIPS OF WAR ITALY'S PRECAUTIONS

'Activity continues on the Russian front, but affairs are jquiet in France and Belgium, with the exception of the 'Argonne district, where the enemy's infantry attacks have been violent, but futile. The exchange of German troops continues, the young men being sent to Belgium and the old men to the eastern front, It is significant that the 1915 class, next year's recruits, are being called up. An 'Army Order has been issued at the direction of Sir John, French thanking the British First Army Corps for their defeats of the Germans at Ypres. The honours are shared by some of the most notable of our regiments. A Times correspondent, who has an intimate knowledge of Germany, declares that she js preparing for a long war ; all factories and shipyards are working at high pressure on war material. He declares that Germany is certain to make an - attempt to attack England, though they realise the risk, 'A German estimate of the casualties at the battle on the iYser sets them down at 200,000. On the Belgian coast the British fleet has been active, bombarding to some effect. Impetuous attacks by the Germans have been repulsed by the Russians between the Vistula and the Warta Rivers ; five thousand Austrians have been captured along the Cgenstoehowa-Cracow front, and a brilliant Russian victory is claimed on the Plock-Lenczyca line, the Germans fleeing for the frontiers. Italy has decided to spend an additional £8,000,000 on her navy, and has authorised strategic railways to be built und new artillery regiments to be formed.
