ROWING

(By "Scull.")

In the final heat of the Star Boating Club's trial fours^ there was marked improvement in the rowing as compared with last week. All the men were well, boated. The competing crews were : — H. B. Tomlinson. (stroke), P. Hereford (3), W. Cederholm (2), R. Deighton (bow) ; and W. A. Holmes (stroke), E. Day (3), D. M'Grath (2), D. 11. Corrigan (bow). Tomlinson's crew was again the pick of the competitors. He owed something to Hereford, who was skilful, if slow, and to Cederholm, who rowed nicely at times. Deighton was tried at bow, and rowed a very creditable race. M'Grath did a deal of hard work, and combined perfectly with the rest of the crew. Corrigan was a good worker, but rather spoilt himself by shortening his stroke when nearing th« finish. The plant of the Star Boating Club was added to this week by a large shipment of oars and sculls, which arrived by the lonic. On 12th December' crews will enter upon the competition for the Fitzgerald fours. Seven crews are in training. Enthusiasts of the Wellington Bowing Club during the earlier, part of this week were looking eagerly forward to the race for the senior fours, but up to Wednesday night the crews had not met each other. Competitors should -help the committee to get the club races off with as little delay as passible, and thus recognise that by so doing they are only facilitating the work of the club. The crews for the senior fours aTe : — S. Shilling (stroke), G. Johnston (3), O. Jones (2), M. Rafter (bow) ; J. Hoare (stroke), A. Jackson (3), F. Staveley (2), L. Williams (bow) ; A. Donaldson (stroke), W. Hoare (3), H. Ridding (2), E. Shaw (bow). 0. Jones, who was of great service to the club some years ago, is again on the active list, and is giving every evidence of his old cleverness. He is one of those old enthusiasts who have come to the club's assistance during the absence of their best men at the war. In the junior fours, which was being disposed of this week, Dilrew, Connelly, Moss, Thompson, Andrew, Barnes, Machm, Cooke, Watson, MoTton, and Prouse are all new members, 'and form practically the nucleus of the club's junior rowers. They were showing better form recently, but they appear to be 6adly in> .want of a coach who can teach them the essentials of the game. Regatta crews in Christ-church, it is reported, axe going through their training for the Akaroa regatta in a very half-heaTted fashion. Canterbury's crewe, chosen on the 9th, have not yet made their appearance. The latest development among the NeAv South Wales scullers is a proposed match betAveen Charlie Towns, the holder of the New South Wales championship, and Syd. Kemp, who has just returned from England with Jim Paddon, whom he trained for his race wjthErnest Barry.. "
