NEW GUINEA MYSTERY

BRITISH CONSUL FOUND ADVENTURES OF AN .EXPEDITION. (Received November 21, 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The whereabouts of Mr. Jolly, British Consul at Rabaul, has been ascertained. It appeals that immediately the war broke out, the Germans took Mr. Jolly to Kaeweing, 170 miles from Rabaul. An expedition left on 16th October with a machine gun and a three-pounder. A few shots from the latter led the towns people to show the white flag, and the party landed and posted proclamations. The Germans promised to return Mr. Jolly on the following morning. Leaving a garrison, nine men sailed for Garden Island, and captured three vessels containing quantities of dynamite, provisions, and rifles. Eight Germans and sixty natives were taken prisoners. Mr. Jolly in the meanwhile joined the garrison, and stated that he had received excellent treatment at the hands x of the Germans. SENTRY FIRED ON 1 AT SMALL ARMS FACTORY. LONDON, 20th November. A sentry on duty at the Small Amis Factory at Fleetwood was wounded by an unknown man who escaped in the fog. KRUPPS'S CAPITAL A HUGE INCREASE. (Received November 21, 10 a.m.) AMSTERDAM 20th November. The newspaper Vossische Zeitung states that the capital of Krupp's has been increased by seventy million marks. The family will take up the whole of the new issue. [This brings the capital of Krupp's to at least 250,000,000 marks, or over £12,000,000.] • WRECK OF THE OCEANIC COURT MARTIAL ON COMMANDER LONDON, 20th November. The court martial of Commander Henry Smith, on a charge of negligence in connection with the wreck of the armed liner Oceanic, on the north coast of Scotland, has begun. [Lieutenant Blair, on a similar charge, was found guilty and reprimanded.] AUSTRIAN STEAMER SUNK STRIKES A MINE IN THE ADRIATIC. ROME, 20th November. The Austrian steamer Josephine Assad struck a. mine and sank in the Adriatic. Six of the crew were saved.
