BRITISH ENGAGEMENT ENEMY'S ENTRENCHMENTS CARRIED. The High Commissioner reports (London, 19th November, 4 p.m.) :—: — , The General commanding the force operating on the Shat-el-Arab River and Persian Gulf reports that an advance was made on 17th November, nine miles up the right bank of the river. Our troops encountered 4500 of the enemy in a strong entrenched position, with twelve guns. After overcoming a determined resistance, and turning his flank, we carried the entrenchments. The enemy retired, losing two guns, many prisoners, animal transport, and reserve ammunition. Our casualties were :—: — 3 officers and 35 men killed and 15 officers and 300 men wounded. [The Shat-el-Arab is formed by the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates, and flows into the Persian Gulf.] A QUESTION FOR RUMANIA WILL SHE SUPPORT THE LAW OF EUROPE? NEW YORK, 19th November* The New York Tribune has receiyed a cable message from Petrograd stating that three Turkish cruisers were reported to have entered the Sulina, one of the streams by which the Danube enters the Black Sea, and, as a result, Rumania has had the question put straight to her whether she will take sides with Germany or maintain her rights and support the Law of Europe ; in the latter case the Turkish warships will be disarmed and interned. ADVICE TO BELGIUM AMSTERDAM. 19th November. A Dutch news agency states that the late King of Rumania wrote to King Albert of Belgium in July last, advising that Belgium should devote herself to the question of defence, as the miracle of 1870 would not be repeated. AUSTRIANS BOMBARDED FLEE FROM SERVIANS. LONDON. 19th November. A report from Nish announces that the Servian artillery successfully bombarded the Austrians at .Orchard.
