STOLEN PROPERTY
A TERM OF TWO YEARS FOR RECEIVING. "NO CLAIM TO CONSIDERATION." A verdict of guilty 'was returned by the jury yesterday afternoon after The Post had gone to press, in connection with the charge against John Ryan of having on 4th June received from Jenny Lynn the sum of £25 in money and a silver watch, belonging to Sydney Moore, knowing the property to have been dishonestly obtained. When the prisoner appeared for sentence at tho Supreme Court this morning, Mr. P. W. Jackson (counsel for the defence) submitted that Ryan's associates were responsible for his present position. The Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) remarked that accused was liable to a term of seven years' imprisonment, but he did not intend to inflict the maximum penalty. The accused's conduct had not been good, for ho had previously been sentenced to a short term for sly grog-selling in the King Country and had been living with a woman of loose character. He had led that woman (who was serving a sentence of twelve months' imprisonment) to run the risk of punishment to get money for him, and ne had given evidence which was false. He had no claim to the consideration of the Court, and would be sentenced to two years' imprisonment- with hard labour. On the application of Mr. H: H. Ostler (appearing for the Crown), his Honour made an order that the sum of £7 5s found on accused when he was arrested should be given to Moore.
Instructions are being issued by the Admiralty, per medium of the Marine Department, to all masters of merchant and private vessels forbidding the use of the blue ensign during the present hostilities.
