THE SINKING OF THE JEMTCHUG

AN EYE-WITNESS' S TALELONDON, 14th November. An eye-witness of the sinking of the Russian cruisw Jiuif»chug asserts that the Emden, approaching Penang under ' fale« colours, replied to the Russian cruiser's challenge with the signals of the British cruiser Yarmouth, 'stating that she was coming to the anchorage. Before the officer on watch could reply, the Emden swung stern on to the Jemtchug, fired a torpedo, and poured her broadside. There was scarcely a single survivor of the Jemtchug. [The Jemtchug carried 340 men; 85 were killed and 112 wounded — so that about 140 escaped unhurt. The previous messages reported that the Jemtchug was attacked only by torpedoes.] ,
