HARRYING OF MERCHANTMEN

RUSSIAN GUNBOAT REPELS ATTACKS. (Received November 2, 9.30 a.m.) PETROGRAD, Ist 'November. The gunboat Kurpaz, at Odessa, repelled two Turkish terpedo boats which were harrying merchantmen. The French steamer Portugal was attacked in the darkness and struck four times above the water-line. The Turkish torpedo boats while manoeuvring in the harbour discharged, all their guns, destroying the wooden superstructure of the japboat Koubanets. Two Russian merchantmen and a steam launch were also shelled. An attempt to torpedo the Koubanets faileu. The steamer Yalta. floated on the surface for three hours stern upwards. The pilot boats saved the passengers and crew. The majority of the Kazeb's complement were saved by rafts.
