The High Commissioner cables as follows: — LONDON, Ist November. The Admiralty reports that the old cruiser Hermes was torpedoed by a German submarine in the Straits of Dover and sunk. Nearly all the officers and crew were saved. ' Tho Minerable (? Venerable), aided by gunhoal flotillas, was in>- action all day in support of the Belgian left. This is tbe fourteenth day of the naval bombard ruerji. [H.M.B. Venerable is a battleship of «he London class, and- was built in 1899-1902. She is of 15,000 tons, has a ssv&ed of 18 knots, and carries 780 men. Her armament consists of four 12-inch, twelve (Hnoh, sixteen 12-pounder, and six 3-poundcr guns, and four torpedo tnb<?s. She is armoured with 7-inch kAnel.]
