RUSSIA'S ARMIES
REOCCUPATION OF CZERNOWITZ (Received October 31, 11 a.m.) BUCHAREST, 30th October. The Russians reoccupied Czernowitz on Monday, following the defeat inflicted on the Austrinns at Bojana, ten miles east of Czernowitz. [Czernov.iiz is the capital of Bukowina, and is close to the junction of the frontiers of Russia, Galicia, and Rumania. It is 140 miles south-east of Lemberg.J ENEMY'S RESISTANCE BROKEN PETROGRAD, 50th October. Official. — We have broken the resistance of the last unit* of the enemy which were attempting to maintain themselves north of the River' Pilica. All the Austro-German corps beyond the Vistula are in full retreat, and there are indications that the German force has been cut in two. Russian cavalry have entered R adorn. Several thousand Germans have been made prisoners, and a number of guns and ten machine-guns captured. The Germans for four days made fruitless attacks in East Prussia, near Bakalarjevo, losing heavily. [Bakalarjevo is on the Russian side of the frontier, about ten miles west of Suwalki. Radom is sixty miles south of Warsaw, and about thirty-five miles west of Ivangorod and the Vistula.] CAPTURES BY THE GERMANS (Received October 31, 9 a.m.) AMSTERDAM. 30th October. A German official report states :—: — The German attacks in the north-pastern theatre of the war are progressing. Thirteen thousand five hundred Russians, thirty cannon, and thirty-nine machine guns have been captured during the last three weeks. The southeastern front is unchanged.
