GRIM CHARGES

BY THE ALLIES' CAVALRY THE EMDEN'S DEADLY WORK

"Wiih. grim determination the Germans have been endeavouring to carry out' the Kaiser's orders to break through the Allies' lines at any cost, and the roll of dead and wounded has been very great on both sides. Mr. Martin Donohoe, a usually reliable war correspondent, says that the German army that was attempting to force its way to Calais retired shattered and in disorder, while other correspondents state that the enemy has been practically fought to a standstill. The driving back of the Germane was characterised by magnificent charges by the Allied cavalry. Preparing for a retreat, several hundred German motor-cars are said to be held in readiness. Meanwhile the Allies have advanced towards Ostend, carrying two positions en route at the bayonet's point. A German official statement is to the effect that westward of Lille the Germans have made progress, that in the Argonne the Trench were expelled from several of their trenches, and that south-west of Verdun the Germans broke through to the enemy's main position, which they occupied. Petrograd reports that the Russians have broken the resistance of the last units of the enemy whitih Were attempting to maintain themselves north of the River Pilica, that all theAustro-Gernian corps beyond the Vistula are in full retreat, and that " there are indications that the German force has been cut in two." As a set-off against this the Germans enumerate captures made by them during the last three weeks. Prince Louis of Battenberg, First Sea Lord, has resigned his position because of "silly rumours," and it is reported that Admiral Lord Fisher, a previous First Sea Lord, is to succeed him. Lord Fisher has a great reputation and possesses the full confidence of the Navy. Turkey has joined in the war at last, two of her warships — the Goeben and the Breslau (supposed to have been purchased by Turkey from Germany) — taking the initiative. Greece has secured the 'mastery of the Corfu channel in view of emergencies. A German journal asserts that a treaty between the Ameer of Afghanistan and the Sultan of Txtrkey is being concluded.
