CIVIC AFFAIRS
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL
The fortnightly meeting of the City Council last evening was attended by tho Mayor. Mr. J. p. Luke (in the chair), Councillors R. Fletcher, J. E. Fitzgerald, T. C. A. Hislop, R, A. Wright. M. Luckie, L. ' M'Kenzie, J. Fuller, jun. s W. J. Thompson, A. R. Atkinson, H. Buddie, J. Godber, G. Frost, and W. BT. P. Barber. On tho recommendation of the Finance Committee, it v was decided that the sewer bo extended along Whani-street, Vogeltown, and to William-street, Highland Park Estate, the cost being £60 and £43 respectively. The Finance Committee was authorised to acquire certain land for the widening of tho main Wadcstown-road. The City Engineer was instructed to carry t out the improvements required at the junction of Salamanca -road and Kelburn-parade. Authority was granted to the Finance Committee to negotiate for certain land acquired for road-widening purposes at Brooklyn. Two ratepayers were granted loan* on the deferred'payinent system in order to carry out drainage works. An offer to sell 264 Alpinfe and &ubAlpine plants for the uum of £13 4fc was accepted j also the tender of Mt. W, Jennings for the repapering and painting of the custodian's cottage at the Basin Reserve. The council decided that the Hataitai Bowling Club be offered the lease of the Hataitai Town Hall site for grazing purposes, at a nominal rental of 5s per annum, provided it erects a fivewire fence. The Bylaws Committee recommended that notice be served on the owner for the demolition of certain premises in Wakefield-street. The recommendation was adopted, and it was also decided that a condemnation notice be served on the owner and occupier of certain premises in Old Karori-road', as recommended by the Public Health Department. Six weeks' extension of time was granted to an owner of a stable in Arthur-street within which to demolish the premises. It was .resolved that the wages of two tramway employees be made up to full for the time they were absent from work, owing to accidents sustained whilst on duty. On the recommendation of the Baths Committee, it was decided that the platform at the men's and women's bathing sheds at Kilbirnic be extended 40fe and 25ffc respectively, and screened oft", at an estimated cost of £180, and also that a grating be placed on the floor of the sheds. The council resolved that the contractors for the supply of electrical sundries and cables be informed, in reply to their letter on the subject, that the council will require them to carry out the contract entered iato in the matter. The Fire Brigade Committee recommended that the request of the Wellington Fire Underwriters' Association to be permitted to inspect the Fire Brigade call book from time to time be not agreed to, but that the association fee supplied with a copy of the superintendent's monthly report on fires after submission to the committee. — Adopted. Tli© council resolved to allow fourteen days' extension of time for tho receipt of tenders for the supply of a turntable fire escape. It was decided to inform _ the Roseneath and Oriental Bay Municipal Electors' Association, in reply to its request for the removal of car No. 55 from the Oriental Bay route, that the council could not see its way to accede to same, but that the car will be altered to the centre entrance type as soon as it can b« withdrawn from traSe.
