VIOLENT BATTLE PROCEEDING
BETWEEN NIEUPORT AND THE LYS ALLIES ADVANCE SLIGHTLY (Received October 27, 9 a.m.) PAR/IS, 26th October (Midnight). A communique states: — "A very violent battle is proceeding between Nieuport and the Lys. The Germans crossed the Yser between Nieuport and Dixmude. The enemy's attacks westward and southward of Lille were repulsed. Our troops advanced slightly northwest of Soissons, also in the Craonne district. Our heavy artillery fire in the 'Woevre district commands the Thiaucourt-Hoursard-Bainyille road, one of the enemy's principal lines of communication towards St. Mihiel. ' "It is reported from the Argonne that an entire German infantry regiment was annihilated during the operations in the woods northwards of La Chalade. ''The enemy suffered very grave losses in northern France and on tho coast of Belgium. Fifteen hundred German corpses were found in One limited area. Six hundred were taken prisoner on Saturday."
