A vigorous protest against the arrangements for the ordinary holiday train service on the Hutt suburban line yesterday is made by a correspondent, "Stand Up All the Way." Ho admits that carriage accommodation would be in great demahd for race patrons, but contends that the Department should have made a gVeator eftort to cope with the return holiday-ma,king traffic. He states that the 6.45 p.m. train, in which he and his family returned from tho Upper Hutt, was scandalously overcrowded, and men, women, and "children —including babies- — were simply packed together. In "Stand All the Way's" carriage "Iber^ were six pairs of double seats jm each side, providing seating accomnwdation for, say, fifty people. Yet in the two top double seats there were no fewer than 27, moii, women, and children — some of them, of course, htanding. In the next two there were 15, and in the next the occupants were lucky to number only 12. These numbers 1 counted personally, but the crush .was so great-, and was so increased at each station, that I could not count the numbers in the other seats." Our correspondent presumes that the •au.Uiori ties knew how many people travelled from the city, and thinks provision should have been made accordingly ,for their re* turn home.
