THE FISH MARKET

THREE MONTHS' BUSINESS SATISFACTORY REPORT. A satisfactory report on the business done at the Municipal Fish Market was presented to the City Council last nights by Mr. P. H. Alward (manager). It included a statement for the three months, July, Augustj and September, 1914, with a comparative return for the previous three months, and a return for the same period last year. Following are the particulars :-—

The first return, said the manager, chows a decrease of £115 lls 7d in the amount received for fifth sold, but an increase of 383 in the number of sales recorded. Thisjis satisfactory from the point of view of popularity of the market as regards the number of the public availing themselves of the market. The difference in numbers of sales recorded as compared with the amount Tealised for fieh sold can be accounted for by the fact that during April and May trout wa» in season, and is usually sold at per fish, which makes the aggregate takings higher compared with the number of sales made. Again, during the last two months, the de* pressed state of affairs has accounted for less amounts being spent by the average purchaser. As to the second return, Mr. Alw&rd said: — "These figures are a.gain satisfactory in Tegard to \he number of sales recorded, which show unmistakedly the increasing patronage the market is receiving. Although the amount received for fish cold during the month of September this year is £20 less than last year, yet the number of sales recorded ia greater by 400, which is' accounted for by the fact that last' year I had to dispose of a coneidernble quantity of blue cod wholesale, whereas this year practically the whole of the fish arriving at the market is disposed of to the general publio in small quantities." The report was adopted without comment.
