ESPIONAGE CHARGE
ERNST AGAIN BEFORE THE COURT. (Received October 14, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, 13th October. Ernst has been further remanded. Postal officials gave evidence that many letters opened contained remittances of from five to fifteen pounds for various I spies. ' ' [The accused, Karl Ernst, was a hairdresser, of Caledonian-road, not far from the Smithfield Meat Market. Irtii mediately after arrest he petitioned for his release on the ground that he Was a British snbjpct, and concluded by saying that "if I am sent to Germany I shall be arrested «s an English Spy. Thus it will be a case of out of the frying-pan into the fire." Enquiries confirmed his statement that he was a British subject under surveillance from October last. He wa-s employed by a man named Steinbaetir, who has figured in every espionage case during the last four years. Ac--cused's shop was kept under observation, and it was shown that he had received I a number of letters from Potsdam, which he distributed to German spies at Ghatham, Sheerness, and other places.]
