AMERICAN BATTLESHIPS

THREE TO BE COMMENCED IMMEDIATELY. (Received October 14, 8.30 a.m.) ] WASHINGTON, 13th October. The United Stated Navy Department has decided to immediately commence the three authorised battleships of 32,000 tons. The third will be laid down in a Government yard. Each of the battleships will be of 21 knots and armed with a dozen 14-inch guns. [The Government laid down the Pennsylvania in May 1913. and she is

due to be completed early in 1916. A sister, known so far as "No, 39," is also reported to be "building." So far the available records do not show that any others have been authorised, but apparettbly- that step has been taken. These two ships 'Gonform nearly with the above description. They are of 31,400 tons each, and are to be armed with twelve 14-inch, twenty-two 5-inch, and ten smaller guns, and to have a speed of 21 knote,_ They will be 608 feet long. These ships, exclusive of armour and ordnance, are to cost about £1.485,000 each. It seems probable that the three vessels referred to include these two, although both are officially described at the beginning of the year as "building."']
