GREAT MOVEMENT
GERMANS RETREATING CONCENTRATION IN BELGIUM ALLIES' SUCCESSES ITALY AND AUSTRIA OUTLOOK SERIOUS REBELLION IN SOUTH AFRICA PROMPT ACTION BY GOVERNMENT
"Without anyone knowing it" the long-drawn-out battle of the Aisne has ended and a new battle front formed. The Allies are taking the initiative before there is a; possibility of the German troops released by the evacuation of Antwerp being able to arrive to the assistance of General Ton Kluck, and have already not only recovered every inch of ground lost during the strenuous actions near Boye, but have developed an advance to the north. A message from Calais reports a great movement of Germans from Lille in the direction of Courtrai, also _iflc? easing activity between Lille and the coast. Strong German columns are moving in the direction of Ypres, in Belgium, where concentration in large numbers 'is taking place, " There is no doubt/ adds the message, "that the main body is tetreatmg east and norths-west," ' Austria would appear to have serious misgivings regarding Italy's continuance of her attitude of benevolent neutrality, and is taking: measures that seem nothing less than provocative. The Governor of Trieste (which Italy has long wished to ifegain) has ordered the police to take the names of a thousand prominent citizens who are destined to become hostages in ( the event of Italy declaring war on Austria, and has also circularised the police in Austria's Italian provinces as to what action shall be taken in regard to Italian men, women, and children on *the outbreak of hostilities. The synopsis of the test of the circular makes somewhat interesting reading. News from Capetown t6-fky is of a startling nature. In the north-west of the Cape Province a Colonel Mafitz has ie belied, joined the Germans, and arrested officers and men 1 under 4 him who have refused to join him in his disloyalty, ite has also made an agreement with the Governor of German Sotith*West Africa for the cession to the Germans of Walfisoh Bay. In this emergency it is refreshing to leafn that the tJnion IMeflde Minister (General Smuts) is taking prompt measures io utterly crudh the, rebellion, and hag proclaimed maftial law throughout the tJnion.
