GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
OPENING ROUNDS AT AUCKLAND (BY TELEGRAPH,—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) » AUCKLAND, 12th October. The New Zealand golf championship meeting was commenced at Middlemore links to-day, when. the. first and second rounds of the open championship were played. The weather was ideal for play, when the first pair started, shortly after 9 o’clock, but towards 11 o’clock the wind increased and brought up rain, which continued to fall in driving showers for about two hours. The greens had been fast for the past week, and low scoring resulted in the practice,' but today’s rain changed the conditions, and upset some of the players’ form. Details of the play are as follow
In the first round cards were returned by J. Sharland (Auckland), 83 ; R. Kidston (Wellington), 88; F. Binney (Auckland), 91 ; s C. Loch (New Plymouth, professional), 91; R. George (Maungakiekie), 94; and H. .E. Troutbeck (Wellington), 99. These players did not return card# for the second round.
LADIES’ TOURNEY DUNEDIN, 12th October. .At the ladies’ golf meeting to-day in the handicap bogey match, Miss Wood (2 down) was first in the handicap 15 and under, and Miss Harris came second. In the handicaps over 15, Miss Forties. (2 down) was first, and Miss Roberts (5 down) second.
