Supplies of food and forage which reach the base from oversea are forwarded thence by rail to the railhead station sufficiently advanced for the motor transport to carry the stuff to the lines of communication, where the horse-vehicles receive and distribute. The supply column of thirty-eight lorries carry sufficient for seventeen thousand men and four thousand horses. In addition to his ordinary ration, each soldier carries in his haversack a reserve of biscuits and tinned meat. In the recent fighting the enemy's shell fire was so accurate that the roads were impassable by daylight, and the tiansport was only possible at night. Even then the roads were shelled periodically.
