LECTURE ON WAR EXPLOSIVES

Arrangements ar© now well in hand for the lecture to be 'delivered by Professor Easterfield next Tuesday night in the Grand Opera House on the interesting topic of explosives, as used in both, naval and military warfare. The feature of the evening will be the experiments, in the course of which the action of various explosives, such as melinite, gelignite, lyddite, and pycrio acid will be demonstrated and explained — of course under cafe conditions. As the Opera House has been generously lent for the occasion, the Patriotic Funds should benefit very coneiderably by the lecture, which will be under the patronage of His Excellency the Governor.

The Wellington Tennis Club opened its season on the courts in Palmer-street this afternoon. The weather conspired with the members to make the occasion pleasant, and there was a large attendance of players and spectators. Afternoon tea was provided, and a number of gamea were flayed*
