NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BT "SIR LANCBIOT.") Handicaps for the Masterton and Hawkes Bay meetings will appear in The Post on Monday.

Moonglow (Treadmill — Sunglow) was among the winners at Kurow on Thursday. She was formerly a member of Mr. G. D. Greenwood's team, and won the last three races she started in last term. She has made a- good start this season. She carried top weight (9.4) and defeated Charlotte (Charlemagne 11. — Nithreso), a winner at Ashburton, and Bon (Boniform — Eidelweiss), runnerup to Reval at Geraldine. Moonglow is engaged in the Electric Handicap, six furlongs, and October Welter Handicap, one mile, to be run at Dunedin on Friday next. She is liable to be rehandicapped for both events. The Australian Jockey Club's meeting will be continued on Monday. Mr. Watt has entered Tatterley and Ventura in the Shorts Handicap, six furlongs, this pair being the only New Zealanders engaged. The same owner's Mountain Knight, Mr. Greenwood's Camulus and Bimeter, and Mr. W, G. Stead's Ringform are in the Clibborn Stakes, for three-year-olds, nine furlongs. The winner of the A.J.C. Derby has 141 b penalty in this race. The only New Zealander left in the Metropolitan is Moonbria, 7.8. Lochano (Positano — Marvel Loch) recently won over ten furlongs at IRosehill, beating several Metropolitan candidates. She lias a handy impost, 7.2, which is 71b less than she won with recently. Lochano's dam (Marvel Loch) won the Metropolitan, also the Caulfield Cup, which race her sire (Positano) won two years in succession. In the Metropolitan he was beaten by the Wellingtonowned mare Solution. In the absence of Tim Doolan and Bercola, who were handicapped for the First Steeplechase, about two miles and ahalf, the Dominion is without a representative. New Zealand owners have played & prominent part in the decision of the Breeders' Plate since that race was instituted. The two-year-olds owned on this side that are likely to compete in Monday's race are Mr. E. J. Watt's chestnut filly Del Monte (by Mountain King — Belle of Brittany, imp.), and Mr. W. G. Stead's Sweet Corn (by Maltster — Condiment). Bon Ton (nqw owned by Mr. IN. Falkiner, of Bullawarra fame), Ringform, and Red Book (who will carry Mr. E. S. Luttrell's colours), are entered for the Squatters' Handicap, one mile and a-quarter. Among the horses registered with the Tasmanian Turf Club this season are the following: — Lili Vinaka, eh f, yearling, by Kimbolton — Paula, by Oakleigh from Pauline (Hobart Cup winner), by Bundoora from Veno, by Cadogan (imp) from Wave, by Malton from Spray. Sartorious, br c, yearling, by Sarto — Gypsy. iCaimarina, br c, 2 years, by Caiman (imp.) — Barina, by Stepniak from Gitanella, by St. Clair from Gitana, by Rapid Boy. Leading Lady, winner of the Trial Plate at Kurow on Thursday, is a wellbred mare by Royal Artillery — Sopra. She ran third to Marvelite and Margarita in a Trial Plate at Ashburton last month. Leading Lady is engaged in the Tioma Handicap, six furlongs, at Dunedin. The well-brefi Ayeaye (Charlemagne II. — Hermosa), a place-getter at Ashburton, and Sartomart (Sarto—Britomart) filled the places behind Leading Lady. Later in the day Sartomart scored in the Ladies' Bracelet. Sir James Carroll has leased Taringamutu, the Charlemagne II. — Arai te Uru filly, in J. Ayres's Trentham stable, to Mr. Geo. Nash, of Wellington. The two-year-old filly Spangle (Martian — Nantes) is reported to be galloping well at Riccarton. She will probbably make her first appearance in the Dunedin Stakes, to be run on 9th inst. Imarose, Rosabelle, and Rosiam (full brother to Imarose) are now partly owned by their breeder, Mr. H. L. Jackson, and Mr. E. G. Blick, who used to race the useful M«rrie England mare Hinekoa.. The horses named are trained oy W. Jillett at Trentham. The Crucinella filly that has gone into A. Jackson's stable at Wanganui is one of the first of the Alawas who will be racing in Australia this season. The filly is named Cartella, and will be raced by the estate of the late Mr. W. F. M'Beth, whose colours Crucinella carried in the Dominion and Australia. Thrax was an absentee from Riccarton for some days recently. It is understood that he is not to be persevered with for the New Zealand Cup. Thrax was the stable representative in the race last November, but failed to get a place. Tannhauser, who won the Metropolitan last November, will carry Mr. Buchanan's colours next month. • Atr. Tauherenikau on New Year's Day Roumania and Columbus finished in front of Reputation in a handicap event, and on the second day of the meeting the horses named were handicapped to give Mr. Bidwill's colt weight. Neither Roumania nor Columbus has won a race . since, although the latter has been unlucky enough to be placed second three times this season. Up to date Reputation has won £1330 in stakes. John Barleycorn (Sarto — Brisa) won the Kurow Handicap, of 200 soys, six furlongs, in the fair time of lmin 15 4-ssec. He defeated the Riccarton- I trained Lion, runner up to Charlotte at i Ashburton, and others. Both horses are in the Electric Handicap, six furlongs, at Dunedin, with the minimum weight. The name of Apremont, mentioned in, the despatches from the front in yesterday's issue, recalls a French-bred horse of that name who was imported to th© Dominion by the late Mr. G. G. Stead in_ 1882, and stood for many years at Middle Park Stud, Upper Riccarton, i until its dispersal in 1891. Apremont • was a very successful sire and his stock J sold well because they came early. Some of them, probably spoilt in the hand- » ling, were highly strung, but they were generally the best legged horses, great sprinters, and several good stayers. Some of them lasted a long time, notably Whakawatea, who started as a two-year-old and raced until he was about fourteen or fifteen. In four seasons (1886 to 1890) Apremont's stock won £33,397, a great record considering the stakes offering in those days. Two French-bred mares were also imported for Middle „j J!*rk« -flog wa> fi4JPj^J^%.^^hjtgr >; .p|,

Dollar), who- was a great success. She produced Spade Guinea, Apropos, Silvcrmark, Exchange, and Merrie England, also Florin, dam of Lady Florin and Anna (dam of Annabelle, Anita, Taka puna, Akarana, and other winners). Tho other French mare was Fleurange, a daughter of Consul, French Derby win ner. She was not the success tho other pair were, but foaled a number of winners. Fleur de Lys and The Jilt (by Traducer), Queen of Clubs (by King of Clubs), Nemesis, Josephine, Lady Belper, and Frenchy (by St. George), and< Longwaist, Fleurette, and Montrose (by Apremont) were some of her progeny. R. Barlow, the New Plymouth trainer, has leased Simple Sam and Simple Dave from the trustees of the estate of the late Mt. R. Campbell. United Service (Martian—Siberia.) winner of the Tolanba Handicap at Kurow on Thursday, is engaged in tho Taioma Handicap at Dunedin. I

Mr. J. E. Henrys has been appointed handicapper for the Wyndham Racing Club. For its annual meeting, held on New Year's Day, the club gives £1000 in stakes. I When she won at Otaki peroneal incurred 31b penalty in the New Zealand Cup, which brings her impost in that event up to 7.7. The black mare Manitou succumbed on Tuesday last to the injuries she received through falling in the hurdle race at Wanganui on Saturday last. She was a useful performer on the flat, but had been a disappointment as a hurdler. She was an aged made by San Fran — Queensborough, owned by Mr. A. J. StoneWigg, and trained by J. T. Jamieson at Palmerston North. Mr. R. H. Skipwith has been appointed starter to the South Auckland Racing Club. It is reported that the services of the Auckland horseman O'Shea have been secured to ride Warstep at Dunedin, also in the New Zealand Cup. The local gentleman who races as Mr. "P. Soames" has had the misfortune to temporarily lose the services of that useful handicap performer, Ladoga. He injured his hindquarters, it is thought while indulging in a roll, and is unlikely to race at the spring meetings in consequence. Pimpernel ran his last race at Otaki. His owner was disappointed with the form shown by the son of St. Ambrose — Marseillaise, and presented him to the Expeditionary Force as a troop horse. Riccarton stables will be well represented at Dunedin next week. MurrayAynsley will take Warstep^ Marsa, Skene Dhu, Chrysotis, Spangle, and Snub ; A. M'Aulay Encore and. Downsteepy; H. Cutts Quarantine, First Flight, Don Ffancftico, Battle Eve, and Holiday; P. Mason Rencontre and Nones; G. Scobie Fabrikoff, Silver Shield, and Atheldana; R. O'Donnell Bonny Dream, Moulu, Sauci, and perhaps Rhino. Several other Riccarton trainers will also make the trip, but they have not all completed their arrangements yet. 'Tis no use talking — Rataplan did interfere with Cedric "in the straight.", I saw it with the splendid glasses I got from O'Connor and Tydeman, Jewellers, Palmerston North. — Advt.
