LATE SHIPPING

RUAHINE ARRIVES FROM LONDON. Considerably belated on account of the war the New Zealand Shipping Company's R.M.S. Kuahine made her appearance in port at 1 o'clock this afternoon. The vessel sailed from the Home port on the 13th August, a week behind her time-table, and on the trip out omitted the usual call at Capetown. Her stay in New Zealand waters will be as brief as possible, in order that the produce for the Home markets may not be delayed. With this end in view discharge of her Home cargo at Welljngton and Lytteltou will' be carried out expeditiously, it being the intention to work the vessel this evening.

FROM SYDNEY DIRECT. Bound lor Wellington direct the Union Company's Manuka sailed from Sydney at 6 o'clock last evening. According to advice received at the local office of the Union Company the vessel is bringing 60 saloon and 00 steerage passengers, as well as 476 tons of general cargo for Wellington. This includes 1489 cases of fruit. The Manuka should arrive here about noon on Tuesday.

PAKEHA DUE ON THURSDAY. Anticipations are that the Pakeha will complete discharge of the Auckland portion of her London cargo in time to sail for Wellington on Tuesday next. She is due here on Thursday, and subsequently proceeds to ports already mentioned.

PERSONAL. Messrs. S. E. Jones, M. F. Mills, and C. J. Edwards, pursers in the Union Company's service, are serving with the Expeditionary Force. Mr. A, McLellan signed on the Arahura today as chief officer, and Mr. P. King was engaged as extra otllcer. Mr. D. Kobs joined the Monowa-i to-day as fourth engineer. Mr. . M. McKeegan was to-day engaged as second engineer on the Himitangi in place of Mr. C. T. Duncan. Mr. ft. C. Penney, late of the Rosamond, has joined the Waitemata as purser, in place of Mr. C. Leighton, who has come ashore on holiday leave. Air. F. A. Williams, late purser of the Mokoia, is proceeding to San Francisco to take up a similar position on the WyandoMe. ARKtNO'S MISHAP AT DUNEDIN. Whilst being berthed at Dunedin on Wednesday afternoon the steamer Arrino struck tbc pier with some violence. The wharf was damaged to some extent, and several piles are stated to have been twisted and the decking to have suffered sagging. Ah a result of tins damage the Otago Harbour Board has forwarded to Captain Deut a bill for some £145, but the captain repudiates this, and contends that the board is his debtor, as some of the vessel's plates above the water line have been bent inwards. The position (says the Otago Daily Times) Is at present an interesting oue, and it is stated that the matter may not end here. In the meantime the Customs Department is holding un enquiry into the mishap.

Her overhaul not being completed, the Karamu will probably remain at this port until Tuesday, when she sails for Weatport. The Hegulus was to have gone on the Patent Slip to-day for overhaul, but this arrangement has been cancelled, as the Slip is already occupied. The Waimea is due from Greymouth on Thursday to be placed on tlie cradle. With transhipments from vessels detained at Sydney the Waitemata cleitred Auckland lat-e lust evening for WellinKton She should arrive here early on Monday morning, and is to bail aguin about Tuesday for LyUelton and Dimtdm.
