FISHING SEASON

The fishing season in the Wellington Acclimatisation Society's district opens to-morrow. Reports from all parts of the district state that fish are plentiful, and rivers and streams juet right for anglers. Numbers of regular fishermen, however, have gone, or are going, to tho front on military service.

A well-known criminal named Arthur Burgess created a diversion in the Mag' istrate's Court to-day, when he defended a charge of theft of a gold tie-pin brought against him by the police. The facts were that ho politely accosted an elderly, feeble man in Taranaki-street, greeted him as an old friend, stroked him under the chin, straightened his collar, and removed the tie-pin. Each witness he carefully cross-examined, and each time he thought he had scored a point he turned to> those in the body of the Court and smiled. In his final address he suggested that the witnesses did not tell any definite truths ; they were just " choppiu' round." Mr. D. G. A. Cooper. S.M. : "I am satisfied that you are guilty." Inspector Hendrey : "This man is a dangerous member of society. Here is his record : Two months for theft, nine months for robbery with violence at Christchurch, three months for vagrancy, one month for secroting tobacco to be found by prisoners, three months for having insufficient means of support, six months on a similar charge, one month for theft, and he is now undergoing a aeiiteme of two months for theft at Wellington." His Worship : " Well, I am going to impose a further sentence of two months, to commence after tho expiration of the present term." Accused : " You won't make it concurrent?" His Worship (sharply): "No, certainly not." Accused winked, ahd left the dock. The Council of the Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce consists of fourteen members. Twelve nominations as follow have already been received and two more members will be proposed at the annual meeting to-night to bring the number up to fourteen :— -Messrs. C. M. Luke, A. Leigh Hunt, James Reid, William Smith, Robert Hall, John Brodie. K. J. Fitzgibbou. H. G. Hill, H. A. Fox, L. R. Partridge, and L. Ashcroft Edwards.
