CATHEDRAL NOT COMPLETELY GUTTED
IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO RESTORE MAIN FEATURES. LONDON, 23rd September. An eye-witness describes the Reims Cathedral as not being completely gutted, and says that it will be possible to restore the main features. An outline of the official German version of the razing of the cathedral ie that "since the 20th a white flag had been hoisted on the spire of the cathedral, and was respected by our artillery. We discovered that tho Fiench were using the spire as an observation post, and therefore it was necessary to remove the post, which was done by our field artillery. Heavy artillery was not allowed to fire. The bombardment ceased immediately the post wae removed. The French alone are to blame for misusing the white flag." After the first bombardment, the German staff explained that it was due to envoys sent the previous evening not returning. The Germans, in cosequence, concluded that tlioy had been detained as prisoners.
