THE GREAT GERMAN ARMY DISPOSITION OF THE CORPS
(Times and Sydney Sun Services.) (Received September 25, 8 a.m.) '. ' PETROGRAD, 24th September. It is estimated that eight German army corps are operating against General Rennenkampf. Six are stationed at Posen and the Vistula fortresses, and eight in the region of Breslau or with the Austrians. Thus, out of a total of forty-two army corps, twenty-two are operating on the eastern front, eighteen on the western, and two upon service in the interior. [An army corps in Germany consists of about 30,000 men, though a few— perhaps five— contain 43,000. The message indicates that opposed to General Rennenkampf there are about a quarter of a million men. At Posen and the Vistula fortresses (Thorn, Graudenz, Dirschan, and others) there are 180,000 men ; in the Breslau district, or against the Austrians, 240,000. This makes a total of_ 660,000 operating in the east, and 540,000 in the west, with 60,000 occupied in interior services. There is thus a total of forty-two army corps, or 1,260,000 men, in the German army.]
