■» MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Miramar Borough Council met at the King's Chambers last night. Present ■ — The Mayor (Mr. V. Townscnd) and Councillors Edith Huntley, S. M. Stone, M. Tracy, and H. Hawthorne. Much formal business was disposed of. A petition for the extension of the electric light lines to Seatoun Heights was referred to the electrical engineer (Mr. F. Black). The borough engineer (Mr. H. O. Fox) submitted a report for the four weeks
ended 15th September. The expenditure in wages during the period was £125 18s, the biggest item being in connection with road repairs (£44 1656). During the month five connections were made with the water mains, making the total of these 339. Eight permits were issued for sewer connections, which now number 258. Two building permits were issued of a total value of £406. Fifty feet of the sewer leading to the pumps at Karakii Bay bad been opened up to locate a _ serious leak. . In that snort length eight joints were found to be very badly made, and other serious defects were discovered. The sum of £21 8s 2d was expended for ratepayers, including £13 9s 6d for tree-planting in Ludlam-str,eet. Tho work in hand at present was the drainage of six properties under the deferred payment system. It was explained that the money expended on tree-planting would be refunded, and that the work was not being carried out because the council was particularly wealthy this year. As regards the defective drain, that, said the Mayor, pointed to the necessity of an officer of the council supervising all contract work. Accounts amounting to £182 9s were passed for payment.
