CLERKS' DEFALCATIONS
BOROUGH COUNCIL REBUKED. (BT tBLEQRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) DUNEDIN; This Day. In the Supreme Court, John Fowler Gambling and George Frederick Lyons came up for sentence. Both were formerly, clerks in the' employ of the Invefcafgill Borough Council, and they had pleaded guilty to six charges of making false entries in books of accounts. Lyons also pleaded guilty on two further charges of failing to account for moneys to his employers. Evidence was given, as to Gambling's mental condition. Dr. Hogg said the prisoner was looked upon as a simpleton and did not appear to realise the gravity of the situation. He was 62 years of age and his total defalcations amounted to £40. The prisoner had made restitution to the amount of £50. Mr. Justice Sim said it was an improper thing for a Corporation to put such a man in a' position of trust, He ordered the prisoner to come up for sentence when called upon. Lyons,' who was a tramways clerk, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. His total defalcations amounted to £27.
