The Consul for Bolpium announces that the French Minister for War haß authorised at his expense the Tepatria' tion by requisition on French mail boats of all Belgian reservists. The reeer* vists should report without delay at the Belgian Consulate, ' Sydney. Hearty applause followed the announce' meat in Parliament just before midnight last night by the Minister of Defence that the men of the Expeditionary Force at the Palmerston camp had contributed £108 among themselves for the sufferers by the Huntly disaster. He understood the troops in the other camps had lol* lowed their example. The men had expressed their gratification at being able to do something for New Zealand, which had done so much - for them. The Minister's remarks were cordially en* dorsed by Sir Joseph Ward. Evidence of the resourcefulness of the colonial troops has been given by the machine gun section of the Auckland Mounted Rifles, members of which have devised a new method of mounting the machine gun on its tripod, and an improved pack-saddle for the transport of the weapon (telegraph, out Auckland correspondent). The standard method comprises a bolt or pin passed through holes in the standard, and the' operation of mounting the gun is somewhat slow. The new method consists of a clamped bearing, the use of which enables the gun to be adjusted readily on its tripod, and while the operation is both quicker and surer than the usual method, it does not necessitate the exposure of the operator. Application has been made for patents for Ui6 invention, its ingC" nuity having been greatly praised by military experts. A new gun pack'saddle has been designed by a memW of the same section. It carries the gun clear of the horse, and secures a more even distribution of the load.
