In order to bring the pilot staff up to strength when the retirement ot the Harbourmaster (Captain 11. Johnson) and the Doputy- Harbourmaster (Captain W. Davic: ond Mr. John -Sp-juve, , and their appointment is probationary tor six months subjeqt to th"iv passing the necessary examinations. Mi*. He secured his master's certificate wiieu he was 23, and joinerl the Uniori Company iw third officer of the Aparima. He has for the past two yeais been chipf officer o£ the A rah ura. running Im?iUlmmi Wellington and Greymouth. Mi.
